Having and Being a True Friend
December 8, 2009“I get by with a little help from my friends.”
- John Lennon
My dear friend Collette came to my rescue Saturday. I moved to a new house and she waited for the movers to haul in my boxes and furniture while I stayed at the old place, clearing things up. Before I arrived, she had begun cleaning and unpacking. She set-up my kitchen and helped me arrange furniture before she left later in the evening. It was wonderful to wake up the next morning and easily find a cup, tea bag and sugar — even the spoon to stir my freshly brewed tea. Just what I needed to start off the first day in a new house. What was most helpful was the comfort of having a trusted, loving friend be there as I made this transition. Friendship is a gift and I am blessed with good friends.
“It is not so much our friends’ help that helps us as the confident knowledge that they will help us.”
- Epicurus (341 – 270 BC) Greek philosopher.
As I type this, another friend is going through a tough time with a sick family member. I’m thinking about how I can be a supportive and loving friend to her. It’s important to celebrate the good times with friends but it’s in our times of need that we learn what a friend is made of. I wish everyone the blessings of having — and being — a true and dear friend.

That song You Find Out Who Your Friends are comes to mind. It’s very true, when adversity shows up, or you ask for help, that is when you realize who your real friends are, and you learn more about what being a friend is all about.
I am thankful every day for my close friends. I am incredibly blessed with beautiful, intelligent, thoughtful women as my closest friends and I endeavor to deserve their friendship!
