Making room for more goodness
March 4, 2010“Contraction is a natural part of my life.” –Penney Peirce, The Present Moment (March 3 reading)
Recently I began saying no to commitments that no longer serve me well. I’ve already noticed the benefits. I’m getting less email messages I want to avoid and I’m not worrying as much about certain details because I’m not being asked for input. I have more time to embrace new opportunities and do more of what I enjoy.
I have a difficult time saying “no” sometimes. Yet, I’ve come to learn that taking a step back from something to gain perspective can be helpful, not disloyal. I’ve come to see how making room for something new sometimes means letting go of something else.
We are taught that expansion is good (except our waistline!). We strive for more money, a bigger house, a better car, more education, etc… But constant pursuit can be tiring. If I’m not careful, I’ll forget why I’m in pursuit and focus on the race.
When is smaller better? When does tightening make things stronger? When is retreat the best strategy? These questions suggest viewing things from a different perspective. I just want more fun and joy.
