The Shift by Dr. Wayne Dyer
March 9, 2010One of the highlights of my trip to the Hay House I Can Do It! Conference in San Diego last May was seeing Dr. Wayne Dyer’s new movie The Shift: Taking Your Life from Ambition to Meaning, so I am very excited to be one of the first to read his new book of the same name just released by Hay House. 3SharedPaths.com was recently chosen by Hay House to review new releases (provided to us free of charge), so we look forward to sharing our thoughts about their new books on our blog.
In The Shift, Dr. Dyer presents his perspective on how to move from an ego-driven focus on achievement and accumulation to a service focus full of meaning and connection. The movie features stories of how different people make a shift to meaning in their lives, and I think the book offers valuable clarification to illuminate Dr. Dyer’s points in detail. In the book, he explains four phases that we can move through in our lives: 1) From, 2) Ambition, 3) To, and 4) Meaning. When we arrive at a place of Meaning, we have found our purpose. Dr. Dyer weaves his own story of the shifts in his life through each of these phases throughout the book, which gave me valuable insight into his personal journey. An observation that I made while reading the book is that I think people can enter these phases at very different places and experience them at varying degrees and speeds. I have found that some people don’t get so engrossed in ego, finding their meaning and purpose very early in life or possibly knowing it all along. I often wonder why some discover their meaning early on and others are challenged with the task, and I am grateful for teachers like Dr. Dyer who illuminate the way for those of us who need assistance on our journey to meaning.
Consistent with other books by Dr. Dyer, The Shift includes several practical exercises for readers to practice the concepts he presents as well as quotes from poetry and spiritual texts such as the Tao Te Ching and A Course in Miracles that support his perspective. I have especially appreciated Dr. Dyer’s gift of interpreting various writings since reading his book Words of Wisdom several years ago, which was my favorite book to read that year; I was delighted to find similar aspects in The Shift.
Reading The Shift inspired me to take a look at what steps I can take to nurture and motivate my own transition, which I am in the midst of right now. I have chosen a new career path aligned with Dr. Dyer’s advice to seek out our dharma, and I often feel like I don’t know what steps to take and how to best focus my time and energy. So I find his words inspirational, giving me faith to continue moving forward with the knowledge that any time I spend giving and sharing my gifts to help others will help me along my path to Meaning.

It sounds like a great book and video. I think we all could use a shift of perspective when it comes to success and contributing to the world. When we get our focus off of ourselves and put it on the greater good of humanity…wow, things will happen!!!!
