Uncork Your Creativity

September 25, 2011

On Thursday evening, my friend Myrna and I hosted an event for Women’s Week at Roux Wine & Spirits called Uncork Your Creativity. The event combined exploring new wines with writing poetry. I got the idea from Michael Gelb’s book Wine Drinking for Inspired Thinking: Uncork Your Creative Juices, which I highly recommend. We had a blast and were amazed with the creativity of the group!

We invited a local poet, Shelby Taylor, to read everyone’s poetic creations. As soon as she started reading the first poem, I knew we had uncorked something really special that evening. One of my favorite poems was from Sharon Fife:

            Deep inside
            Hidden spices
            Filled with sweetness
Lights that shine into the shadows of time
            Truths untold; unknown
            Fulfillment of the spaces within.

All the poems were very creative, so we decided to pick the winners randomly instead of trying to choose the best. Everyone seemed to really enjoy exploring their creativity, sharing the experience, and hearing the poems that everyone else created.

Myrna and I are excited the event was a success. We plan to offer this in the future as a team-building event for organizations as Michael Gelb explains in his book.  This activity would also be lots of fun for a dinner party. Next time you enjoy a glass of wine, ponder these questions to get your creativity flowing:

If this wine were music, what kind of music would it be?
If this wine were a shape, what shape would it be?
If this wine were a car, what kind of car would it be?
If this wine could dance, what kind of dance would it do?

Cheers!

  1. Carolee, Whenever you come to STL you need to do this for my book club! What a great idea. Kelly
