I am in Washington DC attending the Center for Mind Body Medicine’s Advanced Training. I realized yesterday at lunch that I desire to practice mindful eating more often. The realization came to me as we were beginning lunch when the facilitator invited us to offer gratitude for the meal we were about to eat, and I had already gobbled down half my plate. I wondered in that moment why in the world I eat so fast. It has been a way of life for me as long as I remember, and I don’t enjoy almost always being the first one finished with a meal. Celebrate Life Every Day
January 17, 2012
I was reminded last week how critical it is to celebrate life every day and to show appreciation for all the wonderful people, places, and things we are blessed to experience in our lives. The reminder came when I attended the funeral of my cousin, Amy, who died of unknown causes suddenly last week. Amy was 39 years old, 7 years younger than me and way too young to die. I wasn’t close to Amy as an adult; however, we spent many holidays together at our grandparents’ house while we were growing up. Read the rest of this entry ?

Goals vs. Projects
August 20, 2011I was intrigued to read in Michael Neill’s Supercoach: 10 Secrets to Transform Anyone’s Life about the benefits of turning your goals into projects. Michael explains that projects are worked on in the present, whereas goals are reached in the future. Projects focus on action, and goals focus on results. When you work on projects, you are successful until you fail; however, with goals you only succeed when you reach the goal. Read the rest of this entry ?

Optimum Well-Being in the Moment
July 16, 2011
Living in the present moment and practicing gratitude significantly contribute to my optimum well-being. In any given moment I can go within and focus on all the wonderful aspects of my world. This simple practice grounds me and shifts me from overwhelm, disappointment or frustration very quickly. When I focus my attention in a more positive direction, new possibilities emerge to the issue I am dealing with that I couldn’t see before. Read the rest of this entry ?

Downshifting to the Slow Lane
March 31, 2011My inner voice has been telling me lately to downshift and switch over to the slow lane for awhile. I have long perceived people’s lives as either speeding along in the fast lane or cruising in the slow lane, and I love visiting friends and family who I think live in the slow lane to get a glimpse of how that feels for a few days. Detaching from the Outcome
September 16, 2010“Commit to the process, detach from the outcome.” –From the Baghavad Gita. I’ve been thinking about how to adopt this attitude. If you search on this topic you’ll see lots of interesting discussion about it. I like Michael Prescott’s blog post about detaching from the outcome.
My experience volunteering with the Peace Corps in my 30s was an example of being focused on the outcome. Honestly, I didn’t realize at the time that I had an outcome in mind. I went to the assignment wanting to help others but I had already decided how I should help, whether or not that’s what was possible at that time and place. Read the rest of this entry ?

Think Happy, Feel Happy, Be Happy
May 6, 2010Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony. –Ghandi
On a recent morning my first thought was “be happy.” Then I thought, “feel happy, think happy.” I mention this because I rarely wake up telling myself to be happy. As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, I often wake up with a to-do list or worrying about something as my first thoughts. But I’ve become more conscious about my thoughts — what I’m actually thinking, and how I’m feeling Read the rest of this entry ?

Appreciating Romantic Love
March 30, 2010
Why do I appreciate romantic love? My immediate thought seems simple – sharing the joys and challenges of life with a wonderful man. What moments do I enjoy most? Waking up next to him in the morning, telling him how much I love him being part of my life, cheering him on, providing Read the rest of this entry ?

Making room for more goodness
March 4, 2010“Contraction is a natural part of my life.” –Penney Peirce, The Present Moment (March 3 reading)
Recently I began saying no to commitments that no longer serve me well. I’ve already noticed the benefits. I’m getting less email messages I want to avoid and Read the rest of this entry ?
