A Bamboo Log at the Beach

While volunteering at a recent clean-up event on an undeveloped stretch of beach I came across a bamboo log that had washed ashore. The log was about eight feet long. Other volunteers speculated it had floated a long way, perhaps from Asia. Where did the bamboo grow and how did it get to this beach?
